SAP Wk1: Lizard Life

Sneak-A Peek is a fun-tastic summer program for preschoolers (ages 3 to 5) and their parents, grandparents, or caregivers. This summer our SAP program will be a “To Go” program, with packets of take home materials for crafts and activities, and a video lesson from Ms. Mo. Private video links will be sent to registrants via email, and packets will be available for pick-up* at the Center. The program is intended to last up to 1.5 hours, but the actual length will vary each week depending on your child’s interests, abilities, and attention span. You can spread out the activities throughout a day or complete them all at once.

Costs: 

  • Members – $15
  • Non-members – $20
  • Sibling packet – $7.50 each. (You must purchase one SAP To Go program at full Member or Nonmember price to be eligible for a sibling packet. Siblings with packets will receive their own materials needed to participate in all class activities and crafts, and will have access to class video links supplied with the full price program purchase.)

Ages: ages 3 – 5 (but great for any child!)

SAP PreK Science To-Go Packs will be different every week, but will contain the following basic elements:

  • A short Video Lesson – with live animal encounters, specimen spotlights, or nature walks or other content appropriate for the topic
  • An Activity – for instance, a scavenger hunt, hands-on investigation/experiment, game, or other activity related to the topic
  • A Quick Video Story Time – one story related to the topic (Note: if the week’s topic lends itself to more hands-on activities, the story time video may be cut and an additional activity added in its place.)
  • A Ready to Go Craft with Materials (with an accompanying instruction video as needed) – for some crafts, you may need scissors, glue, tape, and crayons or markers from home to complete the craft, but we will supply everything else you need.
  • A Coloring Sheet – related to the topic
  • A Resource Sheet – with things like vocabulary from the lesson, related book recommendations, video links, related poems, virtual or in person field trip ideas, other activity ideas, etc.

Camp: Water Wonders – Wet and Wild

Camp Description:

Put water to the test in a series of aquatic games and activities to discover the properties of water, observe aquatic habitats and the living things that call water home. Learn firsthand what it takes to be an aquatic biologist. Get ready to get wet and make a splash!

Camp Basics

  • Camper Ages: 5 to 10
  • Camp Size: 10 campers, 1 instructor, 1 head counselor
  • Camper Groups: Campers will be socially distanced within two separate groups of 5 campers in their own camp rooms when inside the Center. Campers may socially distance in one group of 10 when outside in the Park.
  • **NEW** Camp Hours: 9 am – 2 pm
  • Campers Bring: Re-fillable water bottles and lunch. We will provide individual prepackaged snacks for campers in the morning and afternoon. No toys from home of any kind will be allowed at camp.
  • Camp Costs: $260 Members / $330 Nonmembers

  • Parents need to understand and comply with new policies for campers who develop symptoms during camp and/or who are absent from camp.

Additional Information About Camp Hygiene

  • All camp spaces inside the center will be disinfected during the day while the campers are outside and again at the end of the day.
  • The Center will be closed to the public during camp, and no parents will be allowed inside the building. Camper pick-up and drop-off will be in front of the Center.
  • Campers will be given their own labeled set of supplies to use during camp to minimize sharing of resources (scissors, tape, glue, crayons, clipboards, etc.).
  • Tools used by campers (hand lenses, binoculars, nets, bug boxes, etc. will be disinfected between uses.
  • Campers will wash their hands with soap and water immediately upon arrival and between activities, and they will have access to alcohol based hand sanitizer throughout the day.
  • Campers and camp staff will have their temperatures taken upon arrival and again during lunch.
  • Campers will maintain safe social distances of 6 feet from other campers and staff.
  • Camp staff (instructors and counselors) will be required to wear masks inside the Center and any time they will be less than 6 feet from campers when outside.

Learn strategies animals and plants use to hunt and locate each other in the wild. Put those strategies into practice in a multitude of hide & seek games. Create camouflage crafts and build hiding spots in the woods.

Join us for a fun exploration of the animals in our park and around Texas. We’ll learn the animal groups and learn how to study them (as well as some basic animal science) by encountering live animals in the classroom and out in the field. Become a junior zoologist at the Nature Discovery Center!

Yoga in the Park

Yoga Instructor Melissa leads an hour long all levels vinyasa/flow class every Saturday at 8:30am (weather permitting) at the Nature Discovery Center! Bring a mat, water, a towel, and a donation for this donation based yoga class. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Nature Discovery Center.

Melissa’s last class before moving away is October 8.

Park Work Day

Come join Ranger and other volunteers in a family-friendly Park Work Day 25 from 9am to noon on the third Saturday of the month between March through May. The focus of this work day will differ (planting, weeding, trail work, etc.). This is a great opportunity to get outside and help the Center in a collaborative volunteer setting!
