Volunteer Opportunities for Adults

Please allow 24 hours for us to process your application. Once you have been approved, you will be able to log in to view and sign up for currently listed volunteer opportunities. If you log in and cannot see activity listings, this means that your application is still in need of approval. Please email us to follow up.

If you would like to pursue any of the volunteer opportunities listed on this page that do not have current listings in our Better Impact Volunteer Portal, please reach out to us via email after you’ve filled out your application so that we work on placing you in a volunteer role that meets our needs and your interests and skills.

Education Program Aides

  • Group Guides – Lead groups of up to 10 elementary aged students on simple field studies in the park and assist them during a brief visit to the Discovery Rooms. (Training provided)
  • Material Prep Helpers – Assist Educators on staff by preparing craft and other materials used in classes and camps and for Nature Story Time.

Messy Play and Play Day in the Park  Aides

  • Messy Play Aides – Assist NDC Staff with Mess Makers programs for kids and/or adults. These programs involve messy crafts and activities that allow attendees to connect with nature in new ways. Assistants help set up activities, pass out materials, demonstrate techniques, and help clean up when the program is done.
  • Play Day in the Park Aides – Assist staff with our popular FREE Play Day in the Park Events including Bubble Day, Sprinkler Day, and Mud Day. These events involve lots of moving parts and you’d be there to help het up, keep things running smoothly, interact with guests and engage them as they explore and play, and to help clean up when the events are over.

Birding Guides
Help guide our seasonal birding walks in Russ Pitman Park and assist Staff Naturalists with birding field trips during Spring and Fall Migrations.

Master Naturalists / Park Project Volunteers
Work with the Park Steward to complete clearly defined projects in the park, including mulching trails, planting native plants, removing invasive species, and more. (Training provided)
Front Area Greeters and Receptionists
Help field phone calls and take messages and greet visitors. We offer 2 shifts, 1 to 3:30 pm or 3:30 to 5 pm, on Tuesdays through Saturdays during the school year. During the Summer our shifts are 10 am to 2 pm Saturday and Sunday depending on staff availability. (Training provided)

Discovery Room Docents
Assist visitors in our Discovery Rooms by showing them our ambassador animals and helping them find interesting biofacts, books, and more to explore.  We offer 2 shifts, 1 to 3:30 pm or 3:30 to 5 pm, on Tuesdays through Saturdays during the school year. During the Summer our shifts are 10 am to 2 pm Saturday and Sunday depending on staff availability. (Training provided)

Publicity Assistants
Aide our Media Coordinator in getting the word out about our programs and community events. Whether you would enjoy drafting press releases or PSAs, posting calendar listings on 3rd party websites, distributing flyers in the community, or serving as a photographer, we would love your help!

Community Event Activity Guides
Help children and their families enjoy fun and educational activities, games, and crafts during our Spring Fling, Pumpkin Patch, and Summer Family Fun Nights.  2 – 3 hour shifts
Special Event Planning Committees
Do you love to plan events; organize auctions; create centerpieces, invitations, or brochures; or round up volunteers? Then this is the place for you! Twilight – Planning begins by early fall for our annual spring gala.

Training sessions are provided for individuals or groups of people interested in volunteer positions that require specialized instruction.
