Birding in the Park

People come from all over Houston and the surrounding area to look for birds in Russ Pitman Park. Here at the park, birds find refuge and abundant resources. We have lots of trees, bushes, and brush piles that offer shelter to birds. Birdhouses, bird feeders (seed and nectar), birdbaths and misters are located throughout the park as well, making this a great bird habitat! Birders are often rewarded with sights of birds not typically seen in their own backyards. Some birds seen in the park, like the Calliope Hummingbird and Allen's Hummingbird, are very rare for the Houston area.

Birds Sighted in the Park

Want more current information? Bird sightings are updated almost daily on a large dry erase board under the carport of the Henshaw House (across from the rabbit hutch). Stop by to see the most recently listed sightings, and hopefully you'll see the birds too!

Lunch with the Birds

Though you are always welcome to come out birding in the park on your own, you can also join our staff or a volunteer bird guide for our regularly scheduled Lunch with the Birds. Give your lunch break a change of pace and yourself a much-deserved treat! Birders (amateurs and experts alike) meet up on the front porch of the Henshaw House at noon on Tuesdays during bird migration seasons (mid September through early November and February through May) to take an informal bird walk through Russ Pitman Park. Fall 2007 dates are September 4 - November 6. Call ahead if you need to borrow binoculars (713-667-6550).
